The story.......
A guy, whose kid used to play rugby with my kid, recently called me to ask if we could recover his company's Microsoft SQL Server database. Their server crashed and they had lost all their data, so they asked us to rebuild the server from a tape that was stored offsite.
We rebuilt the server for them but it turns out that was the easy part. After eagerly waiting for the tape, it finally arrived much to everyone's relief. We tried to restore the backup but the tape gave us an error message.
After an hour of trying a couple of different tapes we had to break it to the client that their backups weren't reliable and they could not be used to restore their server.
The good news.......
Fortunately, there was a fairly recent backup on the test server which meant that they would only lose a couple of days of work. This was more than good news given the situation.
The lesson........
The sad thing is this is not the first time we have seen this happen, this scenario is all too familiar. Companies think their databases are safe because their administrator is religiously backing up to tape everyday.
Unfortunately a backup that has not been tested can sometimes be just as bad as having no backup at all. The moral of the story is that there is more to ensuring the safety of your backups than just backing up.
What action can you take.......
Techlogix has assisted many clients with a thorough independent audit / assessment of their Microsoft SQL Server environment. We will provide recommendations and a plan to ensure that client data really is safe.
We will work with your database administrators to secure your environment. Some things we have helped implement are:
* A backup testing strategy
* Database consistency checks
* Security of backups
* Database maintaintance plan
* Reviews of database design
